Divided
into three segments, Still Lives (In The Americas)
is a part-fictional/part-documentary video about art
and life. While the opening and the ending play with
ideas such as kitsch and sentimentality, the central
portion is a direct pairing of 10 paintings and
their video counterparts. The viewers are introduced
to 10 Asian men (of different age, personalities and
professions) who live in Toronto, shown here in
their everyday life. There is no urgent story except
the everyday survival, of people trying to make a
life out of their environments.
In telling these stories, Still Lives also
emphasizes the presence of the maker by suggestion
of the eyes and hands behind the painting and the
video, and through his conscious interaction with
his subjects. In highlighting the art making
process, Still Lives exposes the artist in his
search for meanings in the everyman of the everyday
life. |
